Dave Prazak, the wrestling manager, play-by-play man, and new promoter for the all-women fed, Shimmer, joined Wrestling Weekly hosts Doc Young and Les Thatcher Thursday, February 2. Dave talked about the many promotions he works for including Ring of Honor (ROH) and Full Impact Pro (FIP) in addition to his newest venture as promoter for Shimmer.
Dave said in his “spare time” he sleeps because wrestling has wound up being an all-consuming interest for him since he debuted as a ring announcer at an Eddie Gilbert memorial show nearly 10 years ago. His past experiences have included his own public access show as a teenager, NWA in New Jersey and Smokey Mountain Wrestling. He’s also managed a few appearances TNA’s Xplosion just by being in the right place at the right time, according to him.
But Dave’s main focus right now is his promotion, Shimmer. His goal is to create an environment to showcase some of the best women wrestlers in the U.S. and Canada. Shimmer has just released volume 1 of their DVD series and their next show is Sunday, February 12 at the Eagles Club in Berwyn in the Chicago area. Les and Dave talked about the woman wrestler who is a shining light in the business, Cheerleader Melissa. She is once again on the Shimmer card and Dave said his hope with Shimmer is to “seek out the Cheerleader Melissas and the Sara Del Reys of the world” so they can showcase their vast talents and teach each other at the same time.
The second show promises DVD releases of volumes 3 and 4. Dave said the sales of volume 1 have been brisk so far. He said the initial sales rivaled the ROH DVD release featuring Kenta Kobashi versus Samoa Joe. He said the fact that the release feature women wrestlers makes no difference. “If you’re a wrestling fan you’ll enjoy it,” he said.
Doc asked Dave about his background in the business and he said he became a manager only after positions as ring announcers became hard to come by. He began working in the Chicago area but at the time found that wrestling in the East Coast in the mid-90s was hotter. He received a little wrestling training and began a manager, something he continues at FIP.
A listener in the chat room asked about the time he managed Don Muraco. He said it was a “one show only thing” versus The Honky Tonk Man but was a thrill to do. He’s managed at TNA on their Xplosion shows but never quite made it to any of their pay-per-views. Still, he’s found that his success can be attributed to “sticking with it for 10 years.” He said if you want to make it in the business you have to be willing to travel for little or no money and to just persevere.
Shimmer’s second show is Sunday, February 12th at the Eagles Club, 6309 26th Street in Berwyn, IL. Volumes 3 & 4 of the Shimmer – Women Athletes DVD series will be filmed during the event. Volume 1 is currently available at www.rohwrestling.com.
Next week on Thursday, February 9, Wrestling Weekly’s Doc and Les will be talking to TNA’s Terry Taylor and Eric Young. Wrestling Weekly featuring Doc Young and LesThatcher can be heard every Thursday from 8:00-10:00 pm EST at www.wrestlingweekly.com.
