Shimmer Women’s Athletes returned to Berwyn, Ill. (suburban Chicago) on Oct. 22, 2006, for another series of tapings. At this event, “Volume 7” then “Volume 8” was recorded.
This venue is an Eagle’s Club, a bar with chandeliers for lighting and this building sells alcohol. The ring is well lit with additional lighting. The crowd is perhaps 150 to 170, and they are hot for the action! Two men’s dark matches started the show at 1:50 p.m.
(a) Truth Martini won a squash.
(b) Trik Davis & Hydra won a squash. Hydra is the ‘sea monster’ from the comedy-themed Chikara Pro, and he was fun. Decent dark match.
The ‘real show’ began at 2:10. Promoter Dave Prazak appeared on a screen above the entrance ramp (think a small Titantron) and informed the crowd that Rebecca Knox is injured and unable to attend. (Most fans already knew this.)
(1) Tiana Ringer defeats Lorelei Lee at 5:29. Ringer wore a white outfit with pink & red. Lee is a cowgirl; I think she’s lost a bit of weight since I first saw her in February. They opened with standing switches and armbars. Ringer hit a Thesz Press and some punches to the face, then some elbow shots to the back. Ringer jawed with the fans, and she was in charge. The crowd rallied for Lee, who hit some chops and a handspring-back-crossbody block. However, Ringer hit a modified Death Valley Driver off the shoulders for the pin. Basic. 3/4*
* On the video screen, Lacey said she heard that Nikki Roxx has an open contract. Lacey made fun of Roxx, saying she didn’t know anything about Roxx. “I think I’ll take your open challenge,” Lacey said.
(2) Ariel defeats Cindy Rogers at 8:42. They opened with standing switches, and Rogers applied a modified Figure Four, and the crowd applauded; Ariel reached the ropes. The crowd was hot and split as the women fought while in a knucklelock at 3:30. Ariel picked it up with a quick armdrag and a dropkick for a nearfall. Rogers hit a snap suplex for a nearfall. Ariel hit a basement dropkick and several hard chops, then a hair mare.
They hit double faceplants, grabbing each other by the hair, and they were both down at 7:00. Rogers hit a chinbreaker over her knee for a nearfall. Ariel came back with a Northern Lights Suplex for a nearfall. Rogers hit an X-Factor for a nearfall. Ariel nailed a stunner for the pin. Average women’s action. *3/4
(3) Malia Hosaka & Lexie Fyfe defeat Portia Perez & Serena Deeb at 8:54. Solid tag action. Ring announcer Joey Eastman introduced the heel team (Hosaka & Fyfe) at 405 pounds, and he immediately apologized, as the fans laughed at the heels, who were upset with Eastman! (The correct team weight is 305 pounds.) The faces work pink, the heels wore matching teal & black outfits; the heels are older and significantly thicker (not heavy) than the tiny fan favorites. Fyfe and Portia started, as Hosaka jawed at the fans. Portia tried, but she couldn’t budge Fyfe.
Hosaka tagged in and faced Serena, with Serena immediately hitting an armdrag, and Hosaka screamed in frustration. The faces worked together to work over Hosaka’s left arm. At 4:00, Fyfe kicked Portia in the face, and the heels began to work over Perez with some double-team moves. Serena made the hot tag and she clotheslined the heels. Serena nailed a dropkick on Hosaka, and the heels bailed to the floor. Perez nailed a spin kick on Hosaka for a nearfall at 8:30. All four fought in the ring. The heels hit a double faceplant on Perez, and Malia covered Portia for the victory. *1/2
(4) MsChif defeats Rain via DQ at 8:29. Good match. MsChif growled at Rain, and Rain backed off. MsChif hit a nice snap suplex for a nearfall. Rain hit a hurricanrana, bridged backward, and pulled on MsChif’s head. Rain stalled on the floor. Back in the ring, she hit some chops and a bulldog for a nearfall. In an awesome spot, MsChif tried to get a hurricanrana, but Rain blocked it and applied a standing Boston Crab (Lion Tamer version). Rain then sat down, almost folding MsChif in half. It looked painful! MsChif reached the ropes.
MsChif came back with a standing moonsault for a nearfall at 3:30. Rain hit a basement dropkick for a nearfall, then a series of doublestomps on the stomach! Rain hit some stiff forearms, and she tied MsChif in a knot. They traded chops at 6:30, and MsChif nailed a drop-toe-hold into the corner. MsChif then nailed a catapult basement dropkick onto Rain’s back as Rain’s head was on the bottom turnbuckle!
Suddenly, Cheerleader Melissa was at ringside, and this distracted and frustrated MsChif! Rain hit a chinbreaker for a nearfall. MsChif hit a spinning faceplant. Suddenly, Lacey ran to ringside and hit Cheerleader Melissa! This fight on the floor distracted the referee. Rain grabbed a weapon and nailed MsChif with it; the ref turned and saw the weapon, and he called for the DQ. Good match. **1/4
(5) Allison Danger defeats Amber O’Neal at 12:19. Good match; perhaps O’Neal’s best singles match in Shimmer. Amber came to the ring to Madonna’s “Material Girl,” and she wore pink with fishnet stalkings. Danger wore a glossy white outfit. Danger immediately tied up the left arm. Amber jawed at fans. They traded rollups, then they traded hard chops at 4:00, but Danger hit much harder! They fought on the floor. In the ring, Amber applied a half-crab at 7:30, and she tied Danger’s knee in the ropes. Danger hit an enziguri, and they were both down, and the crowd was hot! Danger hit a neckbreaker for a nearfall, then five rolling suplexes at 10:00 for a nearfall. Amber hit a standing neckbreaker for a nearfall, and they traded stiff forearms, with the fans loudly booing each of Amber’s blows, and cheering Danger’s offense. Danger slapped on an STF, and Amber tapped out. Good match. **1/2
* In a backstage promo, Daizee Haze was upset that Knox is out of action. She challenged Cheerleader Melissa to a match tonight, noting that they haven’t had a singles match yet in Shimmer.
(6) Nikki Roxx defeats Lacey at 15:00 even. Lacey wore a glittery red outfit. Roxx wore white pants with purple splotches. The crowd loudly chanted, “Nicki Rocks! Lacey sucks!” They opened with good mat reversals, and Lacey bit Roxx’ hand to escape a hold at 3:30. Roxx hit a nice short-arm clothesline for a pop. Roxx hit a Samoan Drop, and Lacey bailed. In the ring, Lacey yanked Roxx’ hair, and she hit some elbow drops to the back, then some kicks to the back in the corner. This match had some great heat! Fans chanted, “You got rabies!” at Lacey.
Roxx fired back with some chops and stiff forearms. Lacey hit a northern lariat to the back of the neck, then she hit a standing neckbreaker for a nearfall at 8:00. However, Roxx hit a standing powerbomb on Lacey for the pin. This was a HUGE upset, and it continues Roxx ascent up the roster. Very good match. ***1/4
* Nattie Neidhart cut a backstage promo, talking about being a third-generation wrestler, and she can’t wait to get Sara Del Ray in the ring. She laughed just like Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart! It was almost eerie how her face had the same expression as her father when laughing!
(7) Mercedes Martinez defeats Lufisto at 13:04. Lufisto is a bit shorter and she’s thick; she wore a camouflage outfit. Mercedes wore a yellow top with black pants. They opened with quick mat wrestling and an intense tie up. Each woman missed a dropkick and some kicks, and they did some nice standing switches. At 4:00, they hit shoulder tackles, with neither woman budging. Mercedes hit a nice dropkick, then a powerslam for a nearfall.
