AYUMI KURIHARA ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT, ADDED TO SHIMMER 53!
Earlier today in Japan, a press conference was held to make the official announcement of the impending retirement of one of the top joshi stars of the current generation, Ayumi Kurihara. As is true with so many professional wrestlers, Ayumi has been continuing to compete for the past several years while dealing with multiple injuries that have never fully healed. Her official retirement show and farewell match will take place on August 4th at Korakuen Hall.
Through the assistance of the S-Ovation Co., which later went on to begin promoting events under the Joshi 4 Hope banner, Kurihara was able to make her way to the United States to debut for SHIMMER during April of 2010. Ayumi and rival Tomoka Nakagawa debuted in impressive fashion by tearing the house down with a semi main event bout against one another at SHIMMER 29, instantly establishing themselves with the SHIMMER audience in this part of the world.
Ayumi went on to have a series of matches against Daizee Haze, as well as memorable outings against opponents such as Sara Del Rey, Nikki Roxx, Cheerleader Melissa, Madison Eagles, and Nicole Matthews. Ayumi also shared the honor of competing in the first all joshi SHIMMER main event, participating in a classic battle against Ayako Hamada at SHIMMER 38. The two women brought out the best in one another in that match, and gave the fans at the Berwyn Eagles Club the rare opportunity of seeing two of Japan's best face off in a main event on American soil.
Kurihara and Hamada followed that up by deciding to form a tag team within the SHIMMER ranks. The pair became the fifth SHIMMER Tag Team Champions at SHIMMER 41, defeating the team of Haze & Nakagawa to earn the titles. They proceeded to defend the SHIMMER Tag Team Championship on eight different occasions, including becoming the first tag team to make an international defense, against Hiroyo Matsumoto & Misaki Ohata at the "Joshi 4 Hope III" event in Tokyo. Ayumi & Ayako ultimately lost the titles in the four team elimination match at SHIMMER 48, which was the last time Ayumi competed inside the SHIMMER ring.
With Ayumi's impending retirement in Japan on August 4th, she made it known to both the Joshi 4 Hope office as well as SHIMMER management that she wanted to return to the United States one more time before hanging up the boots. Though Ayumi has obligations in Japan during the week of the upcoming SHIMMER tapings in Berwyn, she was able to rearrange her schedule to be able to head to the States for our SHIMMER 53 event as part of WrestleCon next weekend!
During her time in SHIMMER, Kurihara has had the opportunity to step in the ring against virtually all of the top names on the roster at one time or another, be it in singles or tag team action. The one major exception, who Ayumi has not faced as of yet, is one of the SHIMMER originals, and one of the very best female competitors to come out of the United States in the past ten years, "The Latina Sensation" Mercedes Martinez. As a result, the match between them has been signed for SHIMMER 53 on April 6th at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, NJ, as part of WrestleCon! If you can't be there to witness it in person, you can still see it live on iPPV!
