49-50 were pretty darned good (better than 45-46). It'll be great to see these when they come out...
There's always a bit of excitement at seeing all the stuff I missed at the live show, mixed with a bit of disappointment at what didn't get make the cut. I guess that's the thing about having two kinds of product, the live show and the excellent DVDs.
Much as I've been enjoying these early volumes in terms of actual content, the production values have really improved over the years!

And for those who've asked in the past... starting with 49 there is a no commentary option.

I was thinking "who wouldn't want to hear Portia's quips?" - then I saw MsChif/LuFisto from Volume 26 without commentary. Felt just like I was back at the Eagles Club. As good as the commentary is, it can take away from the atmosphere at the show sometimes, so it's good that No Commentary is an option.

Yeah it's a good idea. Though Portia's jokes are one of the best things about Shimmer. Her comment's about Hamada's awful Crush costume and the whole Brawl For All quips were the funniest thing I've ever heard in commentary! Also Dave, Danger and Portia always did a great job and not talking over the fun stuff said by wrestlers or fans. It's nice for those who want it though.

I suppose that's a nice feature for those who enjoy it that way.
It's one I'll never use, I totally love Portia on commentary!

I really can't enjoy wrestling on television/dvd/web etc. without commentary. It's really the only reason why I don't buy NCW Femme Fatales DVD's. I know the content and quality are great, but it just isn't the same without commentary. I think it's a vital part of the presentation.
I've heard people make the argument that no commentary makes it more like the live experience. But to me; watching at home is nothing like a live event, and having play-by-play (even in a foreign language) is just essential to the presentation. How else would we know what the moves are called? Or background information on the wrestlers? Just my opinion.

Always comes down to who is doing the commentary whether I shut off the volume or not. At home I want some commentary. I hate being at shows where the ring announcer or someone is trying to call the match. I don't want that when I am there.

^ I'm with you on that. Live commentary over the speakers is no bueno. Commentary is only necessary when watching at home.

^ I'm with you on that. Live commentary over the speakers is no bueno. Commentary is only necessary when watching at home. I remember at the WWA show I was at in 2001 they had Borash & Konnan's (and Disco as well, I think he sat in for at least one match) commentary over the PA. It was very weird. We had to essentially accept that we could hear them but the wrestlers couldn't, because if they could shouldn't they get upset about the things Disco in particular was saying about them? Not that he was burying them or anything, it was just general heel announcer shtick. As I said... weird. But as far as the "commentary vs no commentary" thing on DVD goes, I think it can cut both ways. Sometimes commentary can dampen the live atmosphere or at least my memory of it, but sometimes commentary can make a match more watchable. And not just from the information "Who are these people and why are they fighting" point of view. There are times a match is just so bad that's it's nice to have a distraction One of the key points of commentary for me, even if it's a foreign product or if the annoucing is in a foreign language (more than once while watching a WWE DVD match where the English commentary was hideous, especially when it was the Cole/Lawler/Striker trio, I have switched to the Spanish soundtrack and it became instantly better) is even if you can't understand them the enthusiasm of the commentary can be infectious (Japanese commentary in particular) and make a match seem better than it is. That's one reason why I do wish there was commentary on Femmes Fatales DVDs, even in French, but that's another issue, and I don't think their DVDs (or PWWA's for that matter) are necessarily hurt by the lack of if. It's an intriguing development with SHIMMER DVDs and it will certainly be interesting to see how this works out.

^ Ha! Excellent point, WWE's commentary team is pretty lousy these days. I have seen the spanish version of RAW on the Mexican channel, and you're right; it is much more entertaining.

For those of you who own the 2003 Royal Rumble DVD I urge you to watch the Rumble with the Spainish audio, it's hilarious! "Shawwwwwwwwn Miiiiiiiiiichaellls!" and one of them sings Christian's entrance music!

And for those who've asked in the past... starting with 49 there is a no commentary option. Cool. I've said it before, if a DVD has to have a commentary, it's obviously better if its a good one, and that has always been the case with Shimmer. But even the very best commentary is still just basically someone talking over the action and for a spectacle as visual as pro-wrestling, I've just always found it unneccesary, and sometimes distracting. More often than not, all any commentatory can do is tell us what we're already seeing. I'll listen to the commentary once or twice cos, as others have said, Portia is always worth listening to. But when I wanna just watch the show, having the 'off' option is very welcome.
