Donutseeds is coming to SHIMMER? I hope he introduces himself to the joshi contingent and confronts them about their supposedly anti-American shirts at the last tapings that he wouldn't shut up about on the board.

I actually found a really good deal on Priceline for the Baymont Inn & Suites near O'Hare so that's where we'll be staying.

I stayed at the Rodeway Inn for my first Shimmer experience. While I didn't spend too much time in the room over the weekend, I really wasn't too impressed. The internet connection was TERRIBLE. Are they any places to stay that are close to the venue that are better than Rodeway?

Not as close/convenient. The aforementioned Hampton is about 11 miles away. Midway Airport hotels are about 15 miles.

I've always thought being as close to the venue as humanly possible is really overrated unless you're without a car and want to cut down on cab fares. My hotel of choice when I'm up for the shows is the Super 8 in Bridgeview. It's 10-12 miles out depending on your route. The wifi has worked well in the past. Decent continental breakfast. Come to think of it, I've never really been disappointed by a Super 8 anywhere. (Though some are nicer than others.)

Are they any places to stay that are close to the venue that are better than Rodeway? My wife and I went to the Vol 27-28 taping for our first Shimmer shows. Last weekend was our second (and third, if you count both days separate) time to Shimmer and we have stayed at the Rodeway both times. We also noticed that the internet was very shoddy... So bad that I couldn't even connect at times and went to the office to ask if perhaps their router was having issues. The response I got was "No, but it's windy out." I'm not the most tech-savvy guy in the world, but I did see that they had what appeared to be three routers positioned in their office at various spots on the window ledge. That makes me think that the routers might not be that strong and, depending on how close your room is to the office, you may or may not get a decent signal. We were in room 20 (lower level, in the corner, where the metal staircase is) which is a suite and while we couldn't get a connection on the bed, we got one on the sofa, maybe 15 feet accross the room. But, it was 15 feet closer to the office and it made a huge difference. I know it would cost a bit of money, but I kinda wish that hotels with wireless internet access that isn't truly covering the entire scope of the complex would just put ethernet ports in the room. I don't mind a wire connecting me to the wall, especially if it's the only way I'm guaranteed to keep a connection, if the "wind" blows the wrong way. -Bill

My friends and I stayed at the Pine Road Inn, nearby Chicagoland Motel, for the past tapings. The rooms were alright and it was cheap, and the internet connection was pretty good according to one of my friends. Also it was within walking distance of 39Ten so that was fun.

Personally, I stayed at the Springhill Suites in Elmhurst this time out. Quick access on and off the Eisenhower, right around 13 miles out, and having a car makes just about anywhere in the western suburbs doable so closest hotel to the venue isn't terribly important to me. Really solid internet access too. I also wish more hotels would offer wired access. Wireless is great, unless you're in a dead spot or an access point goes screwy. But I suppose offering wireless is cheaper than running ethernet ports everywhere that might not get used much because not everyone carries an ethernet cable in their laptop bag.

I had been talking about the savings from Priceline..... while I did save a lot on my hotel, I was screwed as my hotel charged for parking. Although the benefit was they had a free shuttle to the airport, which came in handy. And we were able to pick up their free lobby WiFi, and not pay for the room WiFi.
I have a $100 voucher for hotels this summer. I'm not planning any new trips, so if the summer taping does occur, I will certinally get a room, and try to use it to save money for those traveling in.

I called the front desk about the service as well. Although instead of asking about router problems, I asked for an Ethernet cable that I could connect with. I thought this was a reasonable request as every hotel I have ever stayed at had them available. Nope, Rodeway did not.....and the funny response I got was "well, it is windy outside and that sometimes messes with the signal." At least they were sticking with the same story. After you saying they had routers spread around the office, I am convinced they were poor quality. I was in room 14....the first room against the office and it was terrible. Thanks for all of the ideas on hotels. I am going to try to make it to the next one and I might try to stay at one of the ones you guys have had good experiences with.

I work overnights in an upper scale hotel and have also worked in a lower scale one as well and while it may sound ridiculous, I can back up the Rodeway Inn's assessment that weather can, indeed, interfere with wireless internet signals just like it does with satellite TV signals as it has happened in both hotels I have worked at. That being said, however, I'm not sure why any modern hotel that offers in room internet service doesn't have spare ethernet cables on hand for such an occurrence, other than being horrifically presumptuous that all travelers have their own cables and remember to bring said cables with them.

Most hotels around the airports charge for parking, some to ridiculous degrees. Stayed at the aloft in Rosemont for a taping weekend in '08, and it was $24/day. (!) Outside of the city and the airports, though, hotel parking is free and usually readily available.
One hotel I'd like to try out eventually is The Carleton in Oak Park. It's actually within five miles of the Eagles Club and is a block or two from the CTA Green line and Metra trains. Only caveat is that it's expensive; cheapest I found for the most recent taping before going another route was $105/night for a room in their motel addition without internet access and significantly more for a room in the main building. Catch it far enough in advance, though, and it should be worth a shot.

I must have really struck gold then with the Baymont Inn near O'Hare. Not only was it like $35 a night from Priceline but parking and internet were both free. Sure, it was a bit of a drive everyday to the Eagles Club (about a half hour on a toll free road) but for that low of a price, it was well worth a little extra in gas.
