Episode 60 with Kay Lee RayWe’re just over one week away from ICW: Fierce Females “It’s In Our DNA” in Glasgow, Scotland – the follow up to what we called the best show of the year earlier this year – and with that in mind, we’re talking today to the ICW:FF Scottish Women’s Champion, Kay Lee Ray. On that show, she will be defending her title against Viper and Amazing Kong in a three way match – so we get her thoughts on that, her daredevil style, and whether she still gets the jitters before her matches. We talk about how she got involved in wrestling despite never watching it, wrestling international talent for the first time through Pro-Wrestling EVE, and the story of her concussion during the No Man’s Land iPPV last year where she went to the finals of the Queen of the Ring tournament. We discuss injuries and her high pain threshold, spending Christmas and New Year in Japan, including tales of sickness, karaoke, drinking and wrestling (not necessarily in that order), and her experience so far of working big industry names. There’s also talk of her never-ending feud with her perfect opponent Carmel Jacob, which has involved televised death matches, Carmel’s promo from last weekend, and what that means going into Fierce Females. A really interesting chat with one of Europe’s most fearless competitors. We’ve also got predictions for WWE‘s Night of Champions this weekend, as well as a preview of Female Fight Season in October. ringbellesonline.com/2013/09/13/wow-podcast-60-with-kay-lee-ray/

Episode 61 with Mercedes MartinezIt’s been a long time since we chatted to Mercedes Martinez here on the Women of Wrestling Podcast, and given that she’s coming to the UK this weekend for the Bellatrix 7 iPPV which kickstarts Female Fight Season, we thought it was about damn time. Mercedes talks about looking forward to wrestling in the UK, and defending her NCW:Femmes Fatales Title over here against Miss Mina. Speaking of Femmes Fatales, she gives her views on where they’re going, whether there is a hole in that promotion now that Kalamity has stepped away, the importance of LuFisto and how well Sweet Cherrie did in her main event at Femmes Fatales XII earlier in the year. Speaking of LuFisto, we also address the feud Mercedes has had with her which spanned into WSU, her series with Jessicka Havok there, and try to clarify exactly what Mercedes’ position is with WSU going forward. We talk… yes… WRESTLICIOUS, present her with her own Wrestlicious Rap and investigate what exactly is going on with that programme. Mercedes was also announced today as being a part of the SHIMMER Vols 58-61 tapings in under three weeks. We talk about her thoughts on SHIMMER after all these years, whether a title reign there is still a major goal, and who’s likely to step up with names like Athena and Courtney Rush out through injury during these tapings. We talk SHINE, and her opponent at the last show, Solo Darling, along with her hopes for that promotion. We talk about Mercedes’ current role as the “veteran”, and touch on retirement and what that will mean for her when the day comes, while Lee gets embarrassed with talk of The Big O. Quite the show…! ringbellesonline.com/2013/10/01/wow-podcast-61-with-mercedes-martinez/

Episode 62 with Allysin KayWhen we spoke to Allysin Kay last year for Episode 44 of the Podcast, she was the AIW Absolute Women’s Champion and was on the verge of defending her title in a big challenge at an upcoming Girls Night Out show. Fast forward to now, Kay’s *still* undefeated as champion and on the verge of *another* major title defence at Girls Night Out 9 & 10 this weekend. In the interim she’s been wrestling literally all over the place, including just returning Stateside from a three month tour of Japan. As well as looking forward to Girls Night Out this weekend, we talk the Japan excursion, how it came about, the culture and language issues of an extended stay in Japan (not to mention the humidity and constant fear of Earthquakes). We find out her favourite match from her trip, and her favourite match she saw as a fan, discuss this Instagram picture, and chow down on just where the best steak is in Tokyo. We talk her return to SHINE this past weekend, and the ongoing absence of Taylor Made at SHINE, the (presumably) upcoming reunion of Made In Sin at SHIMMER later in the month, her favourite SHIMMER moments to date, the apparently cursed tag team feud in WSU vs Annie Social & Kimber Lee, her mouthpiece assisted match with Cheerleader Melissa at NCW:Femmes Fatales and her upcoming return to Beyond Wrestling. Oh, and racist Japanese people… Oh Allysin… ringbellesonline.com/2013/10/03/wow-podcast-62-with-allysin-kay/

Episode 63 with Kimber LeeHalfway through Fight Season, and with appearances at AIW Girls Night Out and WSU Blood and Thunder already under her belt, we catch up with a distinctly raspy-voiced Kimber Lee to see how she’s doing ahead of SHIMMER and NCW:Femmes Fatales on the next two weekends. We talk about how her dance background helps her wrestling (and find out that wrestling *is* ballet sometimes). We find out how a chance meeting with DJ Hyde resulted in her becoming the first female graduate of the CZW Academy, and the pressure that brought. We talk about going through tables in CZW to dressing up as a Princess for Wrestling Is Fun!, name confusion, foul-mouthed promos, flying trips to Japan, wrestling LuFisto in Montreal, her favourite match to date and future plans internationally. Catch Kimber this weekend at SHIMMER and next weekend at Femmes Fatales! ringbellesonline.com/2013/10/17/wow-podcast-63-with-kimber-lee/

Episode 64 with Taeler HendrixIt’s been just over a year and a half since we last caught up with Taeler Hendrix for a chat, and it’s fair to say she’s done quite a lot in the intervening months, so with her spreading her wings on the indy circuit, we ask her how she’s enjoying her post TNA life and talk about future plans. We find out how a (fortunate) mistake last year led to her heel turn in OVW, and the very personal inspiration behind her heel characterisation. We talk some of her best story lines in OVW, specifically her work with Dylan Bostic in 2012, her run with Heidi Lovelace over this past Summer and her Four Way Ladder Match in September. Taeler also has a big announcement to make regarding a new tag team she’s going to be unleashing on the indy scene very shortly – find out who she’s teaming with right here. We also touch on the so-called “weight issues” during her time in TNA, and go back over her whole (albeit brief) TNA career – from what she knew (and didnt know) about her Gutcheck with Tara last year, through her various TV appearances and clarify some misconceptions out there. We also bring up the debacle of last year’s aborted GLOW revival in Vegas, ask just where she found one of our T-shirts, and discover her hidden creative talents and non-wrestling goals. A really fun show! ringbellesonline.com/2013/11/09/wow-podcast-64-with-taeler-hendrix/

The Taeler interview is one of my favourites that we've done. I could have listened to her talk all day - we easily covered an hour and didn't even touch her training, starting out or early struggles.
Yep, I'm now a big(ger) fan of Taeler Hendrix.

Episode 65 with Portugal’s Perfect Athlete ShannaIt’s taken over two years since she said “yes” to a podcast appearance to get everything aligned for this show to come together, but the delay has been all for the better because she had a big year last year with US tours taking in appearances in WSU, AIW and SHINE – and she’s on the verge of a third US visit next month to challenge Jessicka Havok for the WSU World Championship at WSU Mutiny on February 8th. We talk to Shanna about all manner of things, including her experiences on her last two US tours, the origins (and pronunciation) of her ring name, her initial years in the business, working with ABC Catch in mainland Europe, injuries, the match that Shanna describes as her “best match ever”, thoughts on TNA (where she finished second in last year’s GutCheck voting), exclusive news and teasers about upcoming US tours and possible bookings and some of her loves away from wrestling… including, yes… 80s rock music~! ringbellesonline.com/2014/01/13/wow-podcast-65-with-shanna/

Episode 66 with “The Female Predator” Amazon, Ayesha RayAlmost two years after doing her very first wrestling interview on our My Name Is show here at Ringbelles, the UK’s “Female Predator” Amazon steps up to a full Women of Wrestling Podcast appearance – and why not? She’s international news these days, fresh off a three month tour of Japan which saw her win the Artist of STARDOM Trios Titles at Korakuen Hall, and wrestle on shows promoted by legends such as Meiko Satomura and Keiji Mutoh/The Great Muta. That was her second tour of Japan in 2013, in fact. Not bad going for someone we first clocked as a trainee with potential about six years ago. Apart from discussing Japan, the language, the loneliness and spending Christmas in Japan, Ayesha discusses her hidden talents, breaking into wrestling under Justin Richards in the UK, her early association with London Inc, spreading her wings in WAW, the tag team match that got four women legitimately suspended from Premier Promotions, the “Amazon” character, her real-life friendship turned in-ring tag team with Rhia O’Reilly, working with Alpha Female (and a car door) at Pro-Wrestling: EVE, wrestling in Australia and we try to get some scoops about her plans for 2014. Oooh, there’s even a creepy clown story. What more could you want? ringbellesonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/episode66.mp3

WOW Podcast #67 with Sassy StephieWhen we last had Sassy Stephie on the Women of Wrestling Podcast back in 2010, this website didn’t even exist yet. Lots to catch up on in the last few years, then – not least the fact that this past weekend Stephie was appearing as Brenda “Juice” Jones in something called the Lingerie Fighting Championships. Err… what? Find out what that’s all about here and how that deal all came together. We also talk of the return of Stephie and her S-N-S Express buddies at SHINE 20 later this month, and speaking of female trios teams, we talk about the (now pretty much former) Midwest Militia of her, Jessicka Havok & Allysin Kay and the role that group played in getting all three of them over, including participating in the only female War Games match. We talk about the changes in WSU since the change of ownership, and the story of the AMISH HORSE ATTACK which destroyed half of Stephie’s car en route to a WSU event. We also talk SHIMMER, wrestling joshis and 1950s throwbacks, injuries in wrestling, the perception people have of her as a “veteran” and how she feels about that role. Stephie gives her picks for the top talents people need to watch out for in the next couple of years, and we talk about her personal life changes of late – including moving to Montreal and her engagement. We get the story of her proposal at the Met-Life Stadium at WrestleMania 29 and the simply awesome discussions she and her fiancé Chris have had over possibly including a guest wrestler at the reception. It’s about an hour and a half long, but given that we haven’t delivered a full-length WOW Podcast for a few months, it’s the least we could do. Enjoy. ringbellesonline.com/2014/06/05/wow-podcast-67-with-sassy-stephie/Oh yeah, we've had our first major overhaul/site redesign since we launched. Check it out, whydontcha? ringbellesonline.com

Episode 68 with Saraya KnightIt’s been almost two years since we had the force of nature known as Saraya Knight on our podcast, so ahead of Bellatrix IX this weekend in Norwich, we figured we’d check in and see how “mum” is doing, especially now that her little girl Paige is the WWE Divas Champion. During the 80+ minute show, topics include include the Channel 4 “Fighting With My Family” documentary from a couple of years back; her extended family (and her ongoing campaign against people imitating her family members on social media); a preview of this weekend’s show (including a discussion on just how good Sammi Baynz is, the ridiculous and true story of Destiny‘s broken bone injury; and a look back at some previous Bellatrix shows, including – believe it or not – the deaf, dumb and blind wrestler who competed on the last show); the wacky story of the night she saw her daughter win the Divas Title on Raw; an update on her eye-watering collection of injuries; the art working the crowd and whether we could see a babyface Saraya Knight in America – and then she tops it all off with a ten minute road-trip story from back in the day that involves a broken down van, a game of Trivial Pursuit, a ditch, a bull, multiple breakdown vehicles, commando manoeuvres in a field and an unexpectedly painful groin. Mental – but we love her. Enjoy the show. ringbellesonline.com/2014/06/13/wow-podcast-68-with-saraya-knight/

Episode 69 with Cherry BombWith SHINE 20 just a day away, we caught up with one half of the Kimber Bombs – none other than Cherry Bomb – on the eve of the night she’s certain they’ll become SHINE Tag Champions. We discuss her recent ankle injury suffered at SMASH wrestling and get an update on how it’s holding up after getting back in the ring last weekend. From there, we discuss – nay, *enthuse* about the tag team of The Kimber Bombs, how they came together, their name, their chemistry in the ring… oh, and ‘Hello Kitty’ cookies. We also find out what happened to the proposed Taeler Hendrix/Cherry Bomb tag team that was first mooted by Taeler on our show last November. We also touch on Cherry’s career ambitions to make it to the top, and the chances she had to work a TNA taping and a couple of ROH TV tapings last year. Amongst other things, there are mentions of CZW, WSU, the upcoming SMASH CanUSA Classic (where she’s defected to Team USA by way of marriage), whether marriage has changed her experiences in wrestling, her upcoming bikini fitness competition and a couple of wacky road trip stories. And before Cherry even gets on the show, we’ve got 20 minutes or so of chat about this coming weekend’s worth of female wrestling shows, the final goodbye to Vickie Guerrero on Raw and the upcoming Paige/Naomi match this weekend. Check it out! ringbellesonline.com/2014/06/27/wow-podcast-69-with-cherry-bomb/

Episode 70 with Veda ScottWrestler, manager, commentator, interviewer, legal representative… Veda Scott wears a lot of hats in the world of pro-wrestling – not bad for someone who’s still relatively young in her career. That means lots to talk about, including lots about her career to date in Ohio’s Absolute Intense Wrestling, and her upcoming Steel Cage Match against Gregory Iron at their ‘Battle of the Sexes’ show on July 26th. We get the background to the feud, and why you should want to see the cage battle, and recount some of Veda’s most hardcore moments in AIW, ranging from bleeding all over the ring to being curb stomped into a kiddie pool full of cheeseburgers. We talk the art of the promo – something which Veda excels at, and try to throw out some advice to wrestlers who don’t feel comfortable selling themselves (or selling tickets) by simply talking. We talk about her transition to babyface in AIW and her turn to the heel side at SHIMMER this year, her favourite moments in SHIMMER and getting to do commentary for SHIMMER, WSU and more. We talk ROH‘s ‘Future of Honor’ show on July 27th, what that’s all about, discuss the future of the ‘Women of Honor’ in ROH, and even touch on The Romantic Touch. Veda gets all excited to talk Texas’ Inspire Pro Wrestling promotion, we discuss her cryptic “Europe” tweet recently and we continue our series of ‘Wacky Road Trip Stories’ with the tale of Veda, Canada, Whirlyball, snow and near-death. No hookers though. There’s also an intro where we run down the card for AIW next weekend and talk WWE‘s newfound interest in featuring women in multiple storylines. Check it out, everybody! ringbellesonline.com/2014/07/18/wow-podcast-70-with-veda-scott/

Episode 71 with Mia Yim“You guys should have Mia Yim on your Podcast” is something we’ve heard for what seems like years. Well, we finally got around to asking her – and we’re pretty confident that you’ll find it was worth the wait. A monster of an interview, clocking in at over 100 minutes, touching on pretty much every aspect of her career to date from her initial training and inspirations to get involved in the business right up to her challenge this weekend for Barbi Hayden‘s NWA World Women’s Championship at Inspire Pro Wrestling in Texas. Subjects up for discussion include… Mia’s history of being bullied at school and how pro-wrestling helped her self confidence – and how her own debut match in 2009 inspired someone else to completely turn their life around, her training in Virginia, followed by joining both the ROH and CZW training schools, her gear, feuding with Greg Excellent in CZW – leading to the big TLC blow-off (and generally about just how underrated Greg Excellent really is). We touch on DJ Hyde and the mini controversy over his “BJ Club” comments at WSU a couple of weekends ago. We discuss the most influential voice in Mia’s early years, getting to go to Japan really early in her career (and being considered one of the “big” girls in Japan), wrestling Manami Toyota, and which Joshi stars she feels she works best with. We talk her knee injury earlier this year and how it played into her SHIMMER weekend in April, and how she changed her style to compensate. We discuss adjusting her style in general, working smarter in the ring and the major part Mercedes Martinez has to play in mentoring that. Obviously the Lucha Sisters and her time in SHINE is up for much happy discussion, including Leva‘s cosplay ideas and how they felt winning the first ever SHINE Tag Titles. We talk Mia’s infamous feud with Allysin Kay in AIW, from the nose-breakery to the crazy steel cage match, working in TNA for two consecutive Knockouts Knockdown PPVs, and Mia’s wacky road trip story involves one Robert Evans! Enjoy! ringbellesonline.com/2014/07/24/wow-podcast-71-with-mia-yim/

I loved listening to this interview. Mia is always authentic, unpretentious and tells her story in an unvarnished way that I appreciate. If a fan listens to this podcast and the Highspots Diva Diaries interview, he/she can get a great picture of Mia. I loved the bits about Mercedes Martinez coaching Mia to "wrestle smart." Mercedes comes off as the next Allison Danger-type Grand Dame of indy wrestlers. Indy wrestling must be feeling the loss of Allison, Daizee, Sara, and Rain. Mercedes is the obvious Fount of Wisdom in the current scene. Young wrestlers should be feel fortunate to get to work Mercedes or listen to her wisdom. What I love about Mia is that she is wide open to learn new things and be the student -- be coached -- even after 5 years of success and indy stardom. She is a female athlete that always wants to earn her way and use whatever coaching she receives to get to the next level (in that way she is an anti-diva -- there's not an ounce of "entitlement" in her. Thanks for the great work on this Ringbelles. Thanks for not cutting the conversation off at 60 minutes! Attachments:
