The question I'm posing here, for serious disccusion is simple- can SHIMMER succeed? Will we see more shows after 11/6, and if so, farther beyond?
There's obviously a lot of points to be made here, so I'll just go with the old pro/con format.
Pros: -ROH Connection: ROH has a very large, loyal fanbase, and having the DVDs up on the ROH site and at the live shows certainly can't hurt them, and probably will help them a great deal, rather than trying to sell the DVDs themselves. It'll get the word out to more fans on the net as well. I can't be the only one who does the vast majority of his DVD buying at ROH live shows (where I plan on picking up the first SHIMMER DVDs, of course).
-Incredible Roster: This has to be the greatest collection of female athletes ever seen in North America, and we don't even have a full roster yet! If this promotion succeeds, it will be because of the incredible talent these young ladies possess.
-Great Commentary & Booking: Dave Prazak is a proven commodity in indy wrestling. He's easily the best commentator in North America today, and commentary can be a major factor for some folks. And he's proven before that he can book women well.
Cons: -Lack of interest: Let's face it, women's wrestling has never been all that popular in the US. This is mostly due to the way it's been presented in the WWE over the last few years, although one could also point out that WCW did make a half-hearted attempt at a serious women's division in the mid-90s without much success. Now, lack of mainstream interest does not have to equal an unsuccesful venture. The question is, is there enough interest to sustain a niche product? We have to hope there is, of course.
And really that's the only con I can think of at this point. It's a big one, though.
Hopefully everyone here on the board will support SHIMMER and buy the first DVDs (and attend the first show if you can). We can only do our part and hope everything goes right for SHIMMER.

Though I can't attend shows (due to where I live) I will definitely be picking up the shows through the ROH website. I've been dying to see women's pro wrestling portrayed in a manner that doesn't promote "t 'n' a" first and foremost. I'm not really up to speed with every roster member (and for that I apologise) but the women I do know, which is through ROH, are a lot of fun to watch wrestle. I can only imagine what they'll be like in SHIMMER, given they'll have their own platform and a bunch of other talented wrestlers to go head-to-head against.
Having ROH as a "sister" promotion of sorts will definitely help out SHIMMER, I think. As you said, Xias, there's a very strong internet fanbase that follows ROH and I personally think a lot of those fans will check SHIMMER out (and hopefully enjoy it so much they continue to buy the shows).
WWE and WCW definitely hurt women's wrestling in the US but there's so many talented wrestlers out there now who are working their asses off to put it back on the map. I think, and definitely hope, that SHIMMER will succeed. Just the concept is a nice change of pace, so I can't even imagine what the wrestling itself will be like. I'm very anxious to see the first show.
Hopefully I didn't ramble on too much :s.

But i'll definately get the DVDS. I will be definately supportive of SHIMMER because we finally get a change from the T&A aspects of WWE, the mixed bag of WEW between talented wrestlers and T&A, and we get an organization who focuses only on Talented wrestlers, and thats a good thing cuz we need that, now if only the people recognize that the female wrestlers are as good if not better than some male wrestlers, that would be real successful on the female wrestling world and it's strong supporters.

Since this concept is so new I'm certain there are enough fans in the midwest area who would be willing to give it a chance. The rest is up to the talent.
I, too, live in the northeast so I'll just be a dvd guy.

I think even if it doesn't draw that many fans the dvd's will still sell well regardless. From what I hear the IWA-MS Volcano Girls show is one of smartmark video's highest selling products. Also I don't think shimmer will be running shows every week or even every month any time soon. I can see the shows being a seasonal thing. This is due to the fact that all the talent involved in the organization are scattered throughout the U.S. The cost for talent would be the thing that would hold shimmer down.

Im just looking forward to an alternative. Ive been to a lot of indys, some good, some crap, and what it sounds like is Shimmer is going to be one of the good ones. Strong style womens bouts have always held an interest for me....I cant wait to see these ladies beat the hell out of each other.
In a GOOD way, of course.

I'm also a dvd fan, as I'm in NJ. I'm a fan of female wrestling, and I hope this venture is successful. But my question is this... with so many fans being non-local, will it hurt the dvd's if the local interest trickles away, and there isn't a solid hot crowd for each event?

It's gonna take some time, nothing --except the onslaught of puberty- happens overnight. It's all about building up a reputation, working hard, making a name, and faith in the wrestling fans ability to recognize that women can wrestle. It's gonna take a while.

I think it can succeed. A lot of the women wrestlers are starting to get respect amont the internet and a few of them have good reputations as wrestlers. I think the biggest thing Shimmer has going for it is the support of RoH. Look at what that has done for FIP. Women's wrestling is a little more specialized than Southern wrestling but I think it's a similar situation. I think they'll get some decent support from the IWA:MS fans in the same area.
I think Shimmer will be able to survive a long time and become fairly successful.

I am really hoping that this promotion will make a good impact. It was very encouraging to hear how successful the Supergirls show in Vancouver went recently. Let's hope SHIMMER follows suit! Slowly, indy wrestling fans are going to take note of women's wrestling, which I must say has improved leaps and bounds in North America in the last few years. Japan has always been the place for women wrestlers to blossom and they've been fully accepted by all wrestling fans. I'd love the same to happen over here. IWA-MS followers have shown their support for one, simply because the promoters are interested in portraying the women as serious athletes. Plus they have the workrate to back it up. If it proves to do well, I'd love some interpromotional matches with wrestlers from Mexico and Japan. That would be an awesome vision

If 200 fans show up that would be considered a good first show draw. What really is going to matter are the dvd sales. I will be buying and reviewing it and if enough good reviews are written then more will be purchased. Its all up to the girls, though.

Dave Prazak being behind the promotion as a booker is going to be key. He believes that the women can carry a show and that's what's really important. The booker needs to have belief in his workers and DP does that. Volcano Girls shows that the fans will support it. That one had the IWA:MS name but Prazak's name should be good as well as the fact that Haze, Lacey, Rain and Ms Chif have really proven themselves in that area.
The fans have already taken notice of the quality of the women competitors but the supply hasn't been steady enough to really get a good following.

like you said IWA MS has proven to that particular area that womens wrestling can be legitamately entertaining in its own right. That alone should give Shimmer a good boost that it needs

With something like this, it's very important for this to do well. When you have the best lady wrestlers in the USA, then there is a chance to make this work. And I believe it will make it. You have to keep all things reasonable in order for it to work. There are many of us whom don't have the opportunity to get to a live show because of where we might live. So certainly purchasing the DVD'S is an important cause.
I have the Volcano Girls 2004 Video and watch it quite often. That is how ladies pro wrestling should be. This is a very strong field of competitors. I hope that the people watching ladies pro wrestling give the ladies an opportunity to succeed. They do deserve the support they will get from us and hopefully can create a nice fan base for wrestling fans all over the country.
