Just to follow up Danger's post above, Danyah, Jen Blake, and Cat Power were given opportunities in a couple of undercard matches on Saturday against more established wrestlers on our roster, to give these new performers a foot in the door with us here at SHIMMER.
While we try our best to feature the top level main event caliber stars on our events, we also make a concerted effort to give new, younger talent valuable opportunities to work their way in and show what they can do when given a chance. Danyah has been trying to work her way into SHIMMER for over a year and a half now, and she did an excellent job in her role on Saturday. Jen Blake is still very new to the business, with under a year of ring time as a wrestler at this stage of her career, but has tremendous potential, and is someone who key members of our roster have really taken under their wing and are working with to help her improve as time goes by.
Someone like Lorelei Lee is a much more polished pro wrestler here in 2008 than the performer we saw back on the early Volumes. If we never debuted young wrestlers like Portia Perez, Serena Deeb, Alexa Thatcher, Ashley Lane, Nicole Matthews, etc. in the past, we'd have never seen them grow and progress as pro wrestlers with the passing of each DVD. I, as well as the rest of the locker room, was pleased with the efforts of all three of the debuting Canadian athletes on Saturday, and they will all be welcome back on July 5th.

Either I'm going deaf or they weren't yelling very loudly, because I heard at most two catcalls about the quality of the match which couldn't also be construed as general negative comments towards Jetta as a heel. Go ahead and schedule that hearing check, because most of the crowd was crapping all over that match and it wasn't heat on Jetta, it was a reaction to the lack of wrestling and the mass amount of stalling. Guess I need one too.

Wesna or Mercedes: Two big names were on hand in the forms of Wesna and Mercedes. I enjoyed a lot of Wesna's other work, but am not a fan at all of Mercedes. I just don't like her. Either way, it was Wesna's debut and Mercedes' return. I've been reminded a thousand times that Mercedes held a win over Del Rey back in the days before the championship. Big deal. Orlando Jordan beat John Cena before Cena was champ, but he couldn't do it today. Claiming that Mercedes is on Del Rey's level is ridiculous and unrealistic. I hate that Wesna got the ultimate disrespect of having to lose cleanly to the returning Martinez and then immediately get killed by Kong. Bottom line - Wesna is superior to Mercedes, and should have been booked that way. I guess the way that some people don't understand how Mercedes is so popular is the same way that I don't understand this way of thinking about her. Nowhere in any of the matches that she has been in have I seen that Mercedes is any less than a top level wrestler and is definitely on the same level as Sara. I've seen her other work elsewhere and it's the same thing. Unless she is fighting against a certain level opponent, she will tear through them. She had one of the best matches I have seen her in with Melissa at one of the Chickfights. Mercedes has beaten many other top level contenders just as Sara has. The comparison to OJ/JC is just ludicrous. But again, I guess I just don't understand how some people feel she is not good, guess I never will. Having seen Wesna for the first time I was thoroughly impressed, especially in her match with Kong. Someone at the show told me that her matches elsewhere are really good, and I have heard about her matches with Melissa. I'll check her out and hope to see more of what she brings to Shimmer.

Why does 411 refer to all of their indy reports as "House Shows" now? Is it because they want people to think of things liek Shimmer DVD tapings as insignificant? The article was good and I know you probably had no control over the headline, but this is a disturbing new trend I am not liking from 411. There is a difference between a "house show" that no one will see except for the live crowd, and a "DVD taping" which will be seen by many people all over the world. You're right, I don't control the headline. As far as the "house show" label is concerned, I have no clue why it's used. What I can tell you, though, is it's not an attempt by anybody to make anything look significant. There are some writers on the site and some readers who make comments on columns who have been pretty antagonistic towards the indies in recent months, but it is definitely not a sentiment shared by the editorial staff. Every time that I've approached the powers that be about more indy coverage, they've been VERY supportive. As an example, the "SHIMMER Starter Guide" that I wrote a few months back started out when one of our writers went on hiatus for a month and was asking on our staff messageboard for something to fill the void he'd be leaving. Somebody jokingly mentioned me writing about SHIMMER for a month straight, and the big boss told me to do it. If there was any kind of agenda to downplay the importance of indy wrestling, that never would have happened. And, at the risk of sounding like a sycophant, I have to agree with everything that DP and Danger said about the Canadian newcomers from this weekend. I actually thought that Danyah and Blake put on perfectly acceptable performances, and, while Power didn't blow me away, there is definitely a need to give new talent a look and a place to develop.

Absolutely, like I said I want to see Blake and Danyah in singles matches. It's kind of hard to judge someone from a couple of tag matches where they're not in the ring half the time and not really getting a whole lot of shine. Kind of the same thing with Ashley's matches at the last taping, and everyone saw how much she improved since then.
I also want to mention what a joy it was to see Mercedes again. She was all smiles all night long, and you could tell it really meant a lot to her to be back. I wish I had the chance to talk to her other than saying welcome back at intermission, but maybe next time.

Fans saying "None of your damn business" along with Joey was funny.

I thought Jetta/Haze was terrible and judging from the reaction of the section I was sitting in alone, I wasn't the only one. The stalling with Jetta and the Wrecking Crew drew immediate X-Pac heat that never let up. Easily the worst singles match of the night in my opinion. I honestly want Jetta and the Homewreckers to stall MORE, because reactions like this always make me laugh. In this "kayfabe is dead" world, it seems like the only way to get people to genuinely hate your guts - especially in front of any indy wrestling crowd that is used to seeing 5,000 moves a minute thanks to acts like the Briscoes - is to just not wrestle for a while. The wrestler gets her desired reaction, and the fans still get to feel smart and like they were not worked because they can come on message boards like this one and explain away their booing with B.S. terms like "X-Pact heat." It's a win-win situation. The fact of the matter is that pro wrestling is a business. Unless it's something that causes you to stop handing your money over to the promotion (or change the channel in the case of a TV-based product), any heat is good heat. I'm with you on this. I don't think the Larry Zbyzsko stalling technique is that big of a deal. If anything, it's a nice way to get heat from a tired crowd. Not to mention, people love I/MHWC so much, it's one way to circumvent a largely mixed reaction for your biggest heel enterprise.

I am sitting here reading over alot of your posts regarding the debut of the Canadian girls, particularly Jen Blake and Danyah, I felt the need to put something out there. Both these girls are still new to the business. They are working hard, paying their dues and they busted their asses on Saturday night. You guys need to realize, no wrestler will ever get better until we are taken out of our comfort zone and put into matches that force us to grow and that take our work to that next level. If the "logic" of giving up on them after their first outing with SHIMMER (or with any company) was used consistently then there would be no Allison Danger. I stank up some rings in my early days and both women are light years ahead of where I was when I broke in. Not one of us will ever get better if we are never given the chance to be in the ring. I watched the match and I can say I was proud of those girls and I can not wait to see how they grow with time and experience. -AD I agree. First, I thought Danyah was fine. And while I wasn't so big on Blake, I can't help but note the Lorelei Lee posts. There used to be long threads about how she wasn't good enough, and now, rightfully so, most everyone admits that her improvement is staggering. I think it's pretty cool that Shimmer is willing to give people the opportunity to develop.

After a very long extend weekend in Chicago I've finally settled down enough to write down some thoughts and ask a few questions.
The show was enjoyable. I found that the new girls really tried hard to impress their new audience. In my opinion Nevaeh and Danyah stood out to me as Ashley Lane and Nicole Matthews did in their first show. Really liked the tag team matches. Shimmer has really stepped up in their tag team division by not just throwing two girls together and calling them a team. One point in the show that was a huge surprise and I took Shimmer to a new level was Ashley Lane & Nevaeh def. Minnesota Home Wrecking Crew (Lacey/Rain). This showed me on any given day anything can happen. The lose didn't hurt The MHWC because the match was very good and it moved another team into a respectful spot in the card. Most knew that Portia Perez would be unable to make the show so they were prepared. I've never seen what Josie bring to the table so not having her there didn't upset me. Serena Deeb for me is hit or miss. I think the two biggest loses to this show was Eden Black and more importantly Alexa Thatcher. Even with the lose to Cheerleader Melissa the momentum for Alexa has been huge. From the time of the Shimmer Volumes 15 and 16 Alexa has improved beyond belief. So with this I ask Dave or anyone who might know: Where was Serena Deeb Eden Black Alexa Thatcher
On a final note once again Congratulations to MsChif and Get Well Soon Allison.

Eden Black and Serena Deeb are currently out of action. Jez is recovering from a shoulder injury, and Serena made the decision to take some time off during the first half of 2008. She should be back in the ring soon. Alexa Thatcher was booked for the show, but had to cancel off at the last minute due to personal matters.

With that I would like to add "Get Well Soons" to both Eden Black and Serena Deeb and to Alexa.....Stay strong in your time of need.

Some other thoughts.
Has the ring always sort of sunk in the middle? The IHWC had trouble keeping their waterbottles in the corner, as it would row into the ring. This lead to a Daizee Haze dropkick into the bottle, as well as an (unintentional?) faceplant into a bottle.
Small detail alert! Jetta appeared in her second volume attire when helping Lacey out of the ring during the first volume.
