I've long thought the appearance of kickpads in pro wrestling was due to MMA. Not really. If anything the rare times you saw kickpads in MMA matches was due to Pro Wrestling. Pancrase used to have guys wear shoes and kickpads, which are used in training/sparring but detrimental to actual fighting, but made them look more like pro wrestlers.

Pancrase used to have guys wear shoes and kickpads, which are used in training/sparring but detrimental to actual fighting, but made them look more like pro wrestlers. Thank you for that insight. I think what helped me make that connection was that people were, some time ago, saying the Undertaker was punching like he was in MMA. I can't recall what stage in his career he was at, but that was about the time I saw the pads seemingly everywhere. I really didn't get why people were wearing them until this past October tapings (my first, btw) and I saw all of the kicking and I was like 'yep, those definitely must help.'

Jogging my memory here, I think the first time I remember seeing them in America was when Masahiro Chono faced Rick Rude in WCW. Maybe I'm mistaken about that, but that would have them appearing in mainstream American wrestling a couple of years before UFC.
Looking back on things, you'll notice that Japanese wrestling of all varieties really began to pick up more widespread American fanfare at the same time that hardcore wrestling and UFC took off. I can still remember the days of getting a FMW VHS tape in the mail, catching a special on Hard Copy about Ultimate Fighting, and then staying up til 2 a.m. for ECW.
It's no surprise that the influences of each have exploded somewhat simultaneously.

Sadly, I missed out on Japanese wrestling until Muta made his appearance in WCW with Gary Hart. And after that, it was years before I heard about Minami Toyota and started looking her up on Youtube. It was because of my Toyota marathons that I knew Hamada was going into the October tapings, and with Hamada being one of the people I was most excited to see, though I did not know who any of the other Japanese women were. October was truly a learning experience for me.

I can only imagine. I'm not very versed in the Japanese wrestling, but I've watched enough of it to know I like it - Misawa/Kobashi marathons, and this and that, still plenty more for me when I get down to it.
I wouldn't really list my FMW collection as brag worthy, but being a younger teenager then, it was fun times.

Not English commentary. Not a real extensive collection either, but just a few tapes. I liked a lot of it, I mean exploding barbed wire cage matches and stuff were cool. The one that I most specifically remember, who knows how many I had, was Best of Barbed Vol. 2. Had to be close to three hours.
I think the reason I bury my memory of it is that the one dude who had a sickle, maybe Mr. Pogo?, oh my god, he used to dig that in and I am pretty sure it scarred me, lol. But Headhunter vs. Headhunter, Leatherface, Onita/Kanemura exploding cage.
I used to show that tape during HS school skipping parties on a regular basis. Doubtful I'll ever watch it again considering I don't own a VCR.

The Kudo/Tsuchiya Commertary on the Tokyo Pop DVD was horrible, I'd rather hear The Great Riki on Toukon Retsuden like here; video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7522503630645773619&hl=en49:37 when He calls the "fireball spot"

I think I have a couple of FMW shows, Best of Barbed Wire Vol. 2, Big Japan Grocery Store Match, Best of Cactus Jack in Japan, and maybe another Big Japan or other assorted tape. I called it a collection, ha. If anyone still watches VHSs and needs a kick down. Japanese commentary.

I seriously hate any time a Japanese event has English dubs or edits.

I seriously hate any time a Japanese event has English dubs or edits. That's why i would rather have Pride FC PPVs from Japan than the Mauro Ranallo/Bas Rutten commentary with all due respect.

Fashion is passion. This thread needs more pictures! Of course we start with Kana. No explanation needed: Mio = #AllPurpleEverything: Meiko's old school Joshi young girl bikini plus lots of flair and sick kickpads is killer: And there is nothing flyer in all of wrestling than Manami Toyota's robe. End of:

Portia's chiseledness has inspired me to abandon my fat ass ways once more (I relapsed after about four thin years) and get built. It is probably going to take me a year, but without her there would have been no inspiration to change my of living like that.
I just uploaded a few pictures of her to facebook and explained who she is to about 350 people, most of them not active wrestling fans. It created an epic discussion on legos. I told them that the worst possible scenario that could come with my infatuation with her, lol, is that I get in shape and tire of buying women things. It's a win win scenario no matter.
Yeah, although I like her hair up in that thing that it's up in when she wrestles in Ninja gear, I gotta say the black shredded outfit with the gold undernearth is both more stylish and fitting.
I'm pretty sure she's the most amazing woman who has ever existed and the best heel in pro wrestling history. And a genius.
