Next Roster Album - What would you prefer?
« Thread Started on Dec 4, 2008, 12:11am »
We're going to be doing another SHIMMER Roster Album in January, or at least another high quality color cardstock album of some sort like the Roster Album we released at the beginning of 2008.
We'd like some feedback on what you'd prefer the format of the next album to be. Should we release a "3rd Anniversary Edition" of a full 2005-2008 Roster Album featuring profiles on all 51 wrestlers who appeared from Vols. 1-22? If we did that, we would update all of the photos to ones taken during 2008 (and with former roster members, use different old photos than we did in last year's edition, to make this new one completely different content than last year's).
An alternate idea would be to just do a photo book consisting of a mix of ringside photos from our various photographers and some locker room posed shots Gilda took as well.
Last year's was 8 album pages. I'm thinking this year we should do either 12 or 16 and just boost the per copy price a bit to reflect the additional costs involved in getting a thicker album printed. If we go as high as 16 pages we could do a complete 51 person roster, and then ALSO have some additional ringside photo pages.
What format would you prefer to see?

I'd like to see 16 page edition,I also think you should print some limited special edition rosters, and combine both your ideas. You know we're a loyal bunch, and some of us(I think)would love to have something rare/special.I sure would.

I like the idea of additional ringside and locker room photos. Maybe more in-depth profiles written out about the wrestlers too. Not saying it needs to be Japan style and note their blood type, but a paragraph or 2 on each wrestler and their style, training background, their rivalries, etc.

Pretty much what Jon said.

To get a high quality album like this printed, the minimum order to place is 1,000 copies. We couldn't do a limited (under 100 copies) run of anything without the per copy price becoming outrageous. As it is, getting 1,000 copies in bulk, the per copy price of a 16 page album (double the size of last year's) would require we charge double, which would already be $20.
For clarification, price-wise...
For us to get an 8 page album printed like last year, it would be $10 once again. A 12 page album would be $15. To do 16 pages would be $20.

I'd like to see results included. I was thinking that as part of each wrestler's bio should include each of their SHIMMER matches. However, the results of each Volume would probably work the best. The ringside photos could perhaps be worked into that.
If we do six per page again, it would take nine for the roster, refs, and Joey. With one more for the cover, that's six to work with. So I'm not sure if the full results would work.
How about a SHIMMER title defense history?

Again, our costs increase with each additional page (well, technically, each multiple of 4 pages). Would everyone be willing to pay an extra $5 to have additional pages of text? I'm thinking not. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing anything that's going to cost over $20, so it actually comes down to whether you'd want to sacrifice pages of photos to have pages of text in their place.

I'd go with 16 pages. That way, not only could you get the entire roster, past and present, in there on the first three and last three pages to serve as bookends to the middle ten pages which could have ringside and backstage photos in sort of a "scrapbook" style... just sorta thinkin' out loud in text here.

I wasn't thinking of anything long enough to fill a page. For instance early '90s trading cards had profile descriptions of wrestlers on the back in addition to the height, weight, hometown, signature moves, titles held. Also, last year's roster album left out the most important person.

I completely agree with Slick here. I know that idea would make it very special to a lot of Shimmer fans, and would gladly pay the price difference. Would probably become as collectible as the first run DVD's if it had autographs in it as well. I know my brother and myself would each buy one.

I'd like to see the 16 page and I'll gladly pay the $20 and I'm glad that you asked us our opinion, but heck, DP, you would know best if that's going to be a smart move or not. What are your thoughts? I'm guessing you wouldn't even bring it up unless you had some faith in the larger product, though, n'est pas?

I would definitely like to see all 51 women represented. They deserve it, and you can't tell SHIMMER's history without including everyone. Throwing in the ringside photos would be a bonus.

For clarification... the mass produced (minumum order of 1,000 copies) 16 pager would be $20. To do a limited run of 100 copies or fewer, the printing costs would wind up being roughly $60 per copy... which I seriously doubt anyone would pay for. The only way for us to get reasonable printing costs is to order in bulk.

How about the first few pages consist of the wrestlers with I don't know the same layout as last year as well as some additional information with some detail and then the last pages of the announcers, referees, DP and Bayless...and then the few middle pages will be collages of action pics or maybe, I don't know how it'll work, a picture from each match ever in SHIMMER...going back to earlier volumes and including alumni and the injured.
Or to save pages (and money for those buying) make the layout similar to this and maybe have four women on each page -
